Friday, May 21 top stories
It is Friday, May 21. Here are today’s top stories.
The National Hurricane Center said they are tracking a weather system near Bermuda that has a 90% chance of becoming a named tropical storm. A tropical storm requires maximum sustained wind speeds of at least 39 mph. The first name on the 2021 Atlantic storm names is “Ana.” Hurricane season begins on June 1, so it’s early.
NOAA scientists predicted a few days ago that there would be 13 to 20 named storms with at least six of them becoming hurricanes. To become a hurricane, sustained wind speeds must be at least 74 mph.
In 2020, there were 30 named storms, which broke a record and required storms to use names from the Greek alphabet.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced his office will lead the prosecution against Kim Potter, the former Brooklyn Center police officer who shot and killed Daunte Wright in April during a traffic stop.
Potter said she intended to use a taser but mistakenly pulled out her firearm. She is charged with second-degree manslaughter. The trial is scheduled to take place in December.
Ellison’s announcement is significant because his Assistant Attorney General Matthew Frank won a murder conviction against Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd.
The Washington Post reported that CNN anchor Chris Cuomo helped his brother Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York, on how to respond to allegations of sexual harassment by joining a series of conference calls with the governor and his top aides.
The Post said Chris encouraged the governor to take a defiant position and not resign. That’s exactly what Andrew has done.
Sources from inside CNN told the Post that they felt very uneasy and upset because he was on official calls rather than just talking about it as a brother. CNN said what Chris did was inappropriate but they will not discipline him.
Chris said last night that he understands why this is a problem for CNN, that it is a mistake, and that he is sorry for putting CNN in a bad spot.

BBC said both Israel and Hamas have claimed military successes in the conflict.
In southern Israel, there were no sirens to warn of incoming Hamas rockets for the first time in 11 days.
Several airlines have resumed service to Tel Aviv.
There were some arrests and confrontations between Israeli police and Muslim worshippers at the al-Aqsa Mosque, so there are still tensions.
Axios reported that the White House is teaming up with nine of the largest dating sites such as Tinder or OkCupid to allow people to clearly identify whether they received the Covid-19 vaccine or not.
The dating apps said they would offer special perks for those who are vaccinated.
OkCupid said its research shows that people who are vaccinated or plan to get vaccinated receive 14% more matches than people who don’t plan to get vaccinated.
The White House hopes to see 70% of American adults to have at least one vaccine by July. The U.S. is currently at 48% with at least one dose.
