It is Friday, July 12, 2024.

I’m currently out of town but I am delivering news here. Here are four top news briefs.

Massive AT&T hack

AT&T said the call and text message records of tens of millions of AT&T cellphone customers were hacked and exposed. It affects calls and texts made from around October 2022 to January 2023.

AT&T said the hacked data did not include the content of calls and text messages — only the times a customer contacted another person. The hacked data includes the phone numbers of others that were contacted, regardless if they were AT&T customers or not. AT&T said almost all of its customers were affected but said the data is not publicly available.

The hacked data does not include names of the customers but there are shrewd people out there who can combine numbers with names. AT&T said they would notify current and former customers who were affected and provide them with resources to protect their information.

Black man dies after struggle with hotel employees

On June 30, a 43-year-old Black man named D’Vontaye Mitchell died in front of a Hyatt Regency hotel in Milwaukee after he was restrained on the ground by four security guards. He was held down on his stomach.

Police and authorities said they are looking at the case as a homicide but the cause remains under investigation and that nobody has been criminally charged so far.

Police said Mitchell caused a disturbance when he entered the hotel on that day and fought with hotel employees while he was being escorted out, but Mitchell’s family disputes that account. The family said the hotel employees were excessive in their response — in how they beat him — and that they could have simply let Mitchell walk away.

An update is that the hotel employees involved were fired. The hotel’s operator said they are saddened and shocked by what happened and that the employees’ conduct violated their policies and procedures.

Mitchell’s family is now being represented by well-known civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump.

Biden’s press conference

President Biden held a solo press conference yesterday after the NATO Summit. He faced many questions about his age, mental fitness, and ability to win the presidency and serve another term.

Biden said he believes he is the most qualified person to go up against Trump and that he can beat him again.

Biden did have one embarrassing moment — he mixed his Vice President Kamala Harris’ name with Trump. Biden said, “I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if I didn’t think that she is not qualified to be president.”

Biden stayed strong in saying that he is the right choice for president, saying that he needs to finish this job because there’s so much at stake with our country.

Trump mocked Biden on social media, saying, “Great job, Joe!” for mixing up his name with Harris.

For now, Biden is still in the race and he’s clearly trying to stay ahead of concerns that he’s not mentally fit.

That’s all the top stories for today. Have a nice weekend and I’ll see you on Monday. Stay with the light.
