Friday, January 22 top news briefs

It is Friday, January 22. Here are top news briefs.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is now the chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, told CNN that he believes that there were lives lost because of Trump administration’s lack of candor about the coronavirus pandemic. Fauci said it was not helpful when the Trump administration went down paths that are not based on any science at all. Fauci said it is a liberating feeling to talk about science without fear of repercussions.

In separate but related news, one of the “America’s Frontline Doctors” who promoted hydroxychloroquine in July, Simone Gold, was arrested because she was a part of the Capitol riots on January 6.

On Thursday, there were 4,142 new deaths from Covid-19 and 190,600 new cases. The numbers continue to be terrible. We are at 411,781 total deaths this year alone.

Comedian Dave Chappelle tested positive for the virus and had to cancel several shows in Austin. He is asymptotic and in quarantine.

Hank Aaron, a baseball legend who broke Babe Ruth’s home run record, passed away at the age of 86 today. His family said he passed away peacefully in his sleep. I watched a video of Aaron hitting his 715th home run, which broke Ruth’s record, in 1974 and saw that it was a wild moment with fans jumping into the field, teammates lifting him up, his parents hugging him, and journalists swarming around him. However, Aaron had to endure death threats by racist fans who didn’t want to see a Black man break the home run record. He said he had to have a police escort with him all the time and that his children were affected because others threatened to kidnap them. Aaron retired in 1976 and was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame and later received a Presidential Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush.

There was controversy in D.C. last night over members of the National Guard tasked with protecting the Capitol being told they could no longer take breaks and rest inside of the building. The rest areas were moved to a parking garage. There were images of troops lying down on concrete parking spots. One guardsman told CNN that they felt betrayed. Lawmakers from both parties immediately intervened and now all troops are allowed to rest inside of the Capitol complex. There are 25,000 guardsmen in D.C. and most will go back home sometime next week.

Rep. Marjorie Greene (R-GA) announced yesterday that she has filed articles of impeachment against President Biden. She repeated accusations that Biden was corrupt during the Obama administration because of his son Hunter’s business dealings with Ukraine. The filing won’t have a chance of advancing in the House because it is controlled by House Speaker Pelosi. On a separate note, Hunter is currently under federal investigation on his tax affairs.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that the House will deliver the article of impeachment against Donald Trump on Monday, which means trial proceedings will begin next week. That doesn’t mean the actual trial will begin next week, just that the process towards a trial will begin. ABC News reported that there is likely to be objections and a debate on whether it is constitutional to put a former president on trial in the Senate. “The Hill” reported that so far there are only five or six Republican senators who would vote for conviction, which is far below the 17 GOP votes needed.

Today the Senate voted 93-2 to confirm retired Gen. Lloyd Austin as secretary of defense. It is a historic moment because he is the first Black American to lead the U.S. military. He said during his confirmation hearings that he would work to get rid of racists and extremist behavior in the military. He said he would do everything he can to support vaccine distribution.
