Trump and Kamala to debate Sept 10

ABC News announced that Donald Trump and Kamala Harris agreed to debate on September 10 on ABC. A few days ago Trump said he wouldn’t do a debate on ABC and tried to pressure Kamala into doing a debate on Fox News on September 4, but he’s changed his mind. Kamala said she’s glad that Trump finally agreed to a debate. So September 10 will be a big night for the presidential race. The last time Trump had a debate, it was with Joe Biden and he dropped out not long after, so a debate can definitely impact the public's perception of either candidate. Trump has had a lot of experience in debates as a presidential candidate from 2016 and 2020, while this will be Kamala’s first debate as a presidential candidate.

Maui honors 102 victims of Lahaina wildfire

Yesterday, many people in Maui, Hawaii honored the 102 victims of the devastating wildfires that hit Lahaina exactly a year ago on August 8, 2023. They did a “paddle out,” which is when surfers, SUP paddlers, and boaters go out on the ocean in a ritual to honor loved ones. Those on the shore blew conch shells and dropped flower petals in the ocean. The wildfire last year destroyed over 2,000 homes. Many of those who were displaced have been living in hotels and are now slowly moving into rental apartments, homes, or temporary modular homes while their permanent homes are being built.

Four hotel workers charged with murdering D’Vontaye Mitchell

Four former Hyatt hotel workers in Milwaukee have been charged with murder in connection with the death of D’Vontaye Mitchell, who was pinned face down on the ground on June 30.

Police said Mitchell was causing a disturbance in the hotel. Videos that were recently released show that hotel employees were very aggressive in pushing, dragging, and beating Mitchell in the lobby and carport areas of the hotel. Mitchell shouted, “help!” several times while others were kneeling on his body before he appeared to pass out.

A medical examiner said Mitchell (43) died from asphyxia and the toxic effects of cocaine and meth in his system. The cause of death was listed as homicide.

An attorney representing the Mitchell family said his death had nothing to do with substance use or health issues — it was because four people beat him to death and jumped on top of him.

The workers are a former bellman, security guards, and a front desk agent. Each faces a maximum of about 15 years in prison if convicted.

New details on Trump assassination attempt

Here is some new information about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Pennsylvania last month.

ABC News explained that FBI agents held a private meeting with Trump last week. The FBI said the man who opened fire at Trump, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was a very intelligent man but may have been struggling with an undiagnosed disorder. When Crooks was in high school, he would routinely sway back and forth while standing at a bus stop but never received a formal diagnosis related to it. He scored higher than 1500 on his SAT pre-college exam and could name every U.S. president from George Washington to the present day. Crooks did not have any known friends and his social circle was limited to his immediate family. In the weeks before the attack, Crooks searched online for both Democratic and Republican politicians and it’s possible that he wanted to shoot Trump because he was the next big name to come near his home area in Pennsylvania. The FBI said they accessed Crooks’ computer but couldn’t see anything that would explain why Crooks decided to do the attack.

The FBI explained that local police saw someone on the roof around three minutes before the shooting but didn’t realize that they had a gun until around 30 seconds before the shooting, which is when an officer climbed on the roof and jumped off when they saw Crooks turn and point a rifle at them. There is a bodycam video that shows this moment but it doesn’t show Crooks. That officer tried to alert others but the attack happened.

It took a Secret Service sniper around five seconds to find Crooks on the roof and kill him with a single shot. Although Trump was spared with his ear grazed by a bullet, Crooks killed a rally-goer and injured two others.

Teacher finds bear in classroom as she preps for school year

In the Bakersfield, California area, a school teacher was shocked to see a bear in her classroom as she was getting ready for the upcoming school year. The classroom has a door that opens to the outside and the teacher left it open as she walked to the main office to make copies. When she returned, she saw the bear and quickly shut the door. She then went to the office again and called her husband, who came and held the door open to let the bear run away. The teacher said there was no damage in the classroom except for a few stolen snacks. So all the teachers out there who are about to go back to your classrooms — watch out for any wild animals!
