NHL player and brother killed by suspected drunk driver

A NHL player for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Johnny Gaudreau, and his brother Matthew, died after they were struck by a suspected drunk driver while they were riding bicycles in New Jersey last night.

Police explained that as the brothers were cycling, a vehicle behind them moved to the middle of the road to make way for them before the suspected drunk driver tried to pass it by driving on the right side, hitting the brothers. The driver, a 43-year-old man, has been charged with two counts of death by auto.

The Blue Jackets said the Gaudreaus' deaths are an unimaginable tragedy. The brothers' sister had a wedding planned for today and Johnny leaves behind a wife and two children.

Deadly listeria outbreak linked to Boar's Head deli meat

At least nine people have died and over 50 have been hospitalized from an outbreak of listeria, a bacteria that can be found on contaminated food. This outbreak is linked to contaminated Boar's Head deli meat. The company, which has a plant in southern Virginia, has recalled millions of pounds of its products, including liverwurst and sliced ham. AP said records show that it repeatedly violated federal regulations and there were instances of mold, insects, liquid dropping from ceilings, and meat and fat residue on walls, floors and equipment. NPR said there have been cases appearing since July and one of the reasons why there are still cases is because the deli meats have long shelf lives and the contaminated food may be still in customers' refrigerators. If you have a Boar's Head product, you can look at the inspection label and if you see find this specific number, 12612, throw it away and clean any surface areas in the refrigerator or other areas where the meat may have touched. Boar’s Head said on its website that they deeply regret the impact this recall has had on affected families and are conducting an extensive investigation.

Kamala Harris’ interview with CNN

Kamala Harris sat down for an interview with CNN that aired last night, which was her first interview since becoming the Democratic nominee for president. Kamala was asked why she has different views today compared with a few years ago. Kamala, when she ran for the presidency in 2020, wanted to see a ban on fracking, supported government-funded healthcare, and was opposed to building more of the border wall. But now, Kamala supports expanding the border wall, doesn’t want to ban fracking, and is not calling for a government-funded healthcare system but wants to expand Medicare access.

Kamala said her “values have not changed,” pointing out that in her time in the Biden administration, they supported a law that addressed greenhouse gas emissions. She said in her time as a California attorney general she prosecuted criminal organizations that illegally bought guns, drugs, and human beings across the border, so her values have not changed.

In another part of the interview, Kamala said she would be open to appointing a Republican member of her cabinet to maintain a diversity of opinion.

Trump wants gov’t or insurance to pay for IVF treatments

Donald Trump said if he wins the presidency, he wants to implement a policy where the government or your health insurance companies would pay for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments for people who struggle to become pregnant. It works by fertilizing a egg and a sperm in a lab and transferring it to a patient’s uterus. Trump said he want to see more babies and he knows that IVF treatments are very expensive. CNN said Trump did not explain how the treatments would be paid for.

Trump said he did not agree with the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision that frozen embryos are considered children and those who destroy them can be held liable for wrongful death. The Alabama governor later signed a law to protect IVF access.

Trump also said he doesn’t agree with a six-week abortion ban — he said we need more weeks. The spokesperson for the Kamala Harris campaign said Trump is a liar and said because Trump overturned Roe v. Wade, IVF is under attack and women’s freedoms have been ripped away in states across the country.

Marmoset monkeys may call each other by name

Researchers believe that marmoset monkeys, which are small monkeys that live in rainforests in South America, can name other monkeys by how they use their whistle-like “phee calls.” Researchers said these types of monkeys are very chatty and often employ different calls when they interact with their small family groups. They analyzed 10 captive monkeys’ calls in a controlled environment and saw that there were unique acoustic patterns when they called different individuals. The Washington Post said bottlenose dolphins and African elephants have been found to use unique vocal calls to address other individuals. It shows that these animals have advanced cognitive abilities.
