Ketanji Brown Jackson speaks at White House
President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris introduced Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as a newly-confirmed Supreme Court justice at the White House. Jackson will be the first Black woman justice when she is sworn in this summer. Biden said this is a moment of real change.
Jackson said, “We have made it.” She said, “I am the dream and the hope of the slave,” which is a quote from Maya Angelou. She said in her family, it took just one generation to go from segregation to the Supreme Court.
50 killed in Ukraine train station bombing
At least 50 people were killed and almost 100 were injured from a Russian missile strike on a train station in the city of Kramatorsk in eastern Ukraine. Videos show multiple people lying motionless on a train platform with suitcases scattered around. Other images showed bodies gathered in one place with tarps or blankets covering them and another showed a large piece of a Russian missile.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said thousands of people were at the train station to evacuate from heavy fighting in eastern Ukraine.
SpaceX rocket carries 4 passengers to ISS
A SpaceX rocket, working in partnership with NASA, launched an all-private crew to the International Space Station. The launch was live-streamed. The mission was organized by Axiom Space, which is a private company that hopes to build a new commercial space station. The passengers are composed of a former NASA astronaut and three paying customers. They will spend eight days on ISS to participate in research projects. Axios said this mission is a part of NASA’s goal to “create an economy in low-Earth orbit supported by private companies.”

Student burned in hand sanitizer experiment
In Texas, a middle school teacher at Granbury ISD put hand sanitizer on a 12-year-old student and lit it on fire for an experiment. The student was injured and possibly suffered third-degree burns. The teacher has resigned because of what happened and explained that they did previous experiments with hand sanitizer and fire without incident. The student was hospitalized and then transferred to a burn center. Local law enforcement said it is up to the district attorney’s office to determine if the teacher committed a crime.
DHL jet splits in half
A DHL cargo jet slid off the runway after landing in Costa Rica on Thursday and split into two pieces. Fortunately, nobody on the crew was injured. The airport, in San Jose, was shut down for hours as crews responded to the crash. DHL said the plane had initially taken off before turning around after 35 miles because it detected a failure in its hydraulic system. The chaos and airport shutdown had an impact on hundreds of flights and 8,000 passengers.
Academy to discuss Will Smith slap
The Academy of Motion Pictures arts & Sciences (Oscars)’s Board of Governors had a board meeting today to decide on possible sanctions against Will Smith for slapping Chris Rock during the Oscars on March 27. The previous date of the meeting was April 18, but it was moved up to today. Smith announced last week that he is resigning from the Academy, but he still has his Oscar for Best Actor for his role in “King Richard.”
