Friday, April 24 coronavirus updates

Hello, welcome to The Daily Moth! It is Friday, April 24. Here are coronavirus news updates.

The U.S. reached a sad milestone today by surpassing 50,000 deaths from COVID-19. There are 884,000 people infected in the U.S. as of this afternoon.

There was a lot of buzz online and in the media from President Donald Trump’s news conference last night in which he suggested the idea that disinfectants or light be applied inside the human body to kill coronavirus.

What made Trump say this? An official from the Department of Homeland Security’s science and technology section, Bill Bryan, explained a study that showed that solar light/UV rays and humidity made it faster for the coronavirus to deteriorate and die on hard surfaces. Bryan said virus samples from saliva showed it survived the best in indoors and dry conditions. Bryan said that they found out that bleach would kill the coronavirus in five minutes, but that isopropyl alcohol would kill it in 30 seconds or less. Bryan said they were studying other disinfectants.

That is when President Trump suggested the idea of bringing “the light inside the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way.” He also said “I see the disinfectant… is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs… we’ll see… the whole concept of the light, the way it kills in one minute…that’s pretty powerful.”

Almost immediately after this news conference people were talking on if Trump said it would be a good idea to “inject” disinfectants, which could include bleach or alcohol or Lysol, in the body.

The makers of Lysol issued a statement said they must make it clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body through injection, ingestion, or any other route.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a statement said that you should never apply a disinfectant to yourself or to others, to not ingest them, or apply them to food.

Maryland’s government said they received over 100 calls on questions about consuming disinfectants as a possible treatment. The state put out an alert that you should, under no circumstances, put disinfectants in the body.

President Trump said today in the Oval Office that he was sarcastic when he talked about disinfectants. He also said during the Q/A that he was not a doctor.

In New York City, the Navy ship USNS Comfort is now getting ready to depart the city because it is no longer needed as cases are declining.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has extended the state’s stay-at-home order to May 15. She is also requiring people to wear face coverings when entering enclosed spaces. She is now allowing nurseries, landscaping and lawn-service companies to reopen — previously they were ordered shut.

In Georgia, barbershops and salons have reopened. Nail salons, gyms, bowling alleys, and tattoo parlors have also reopened. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is one of the first governors to allow an “reopening.” Oklahoma and Alaska are doing the same.
