FCC announces requirement for all mobile phones to be hearing aid compatible

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced today that it’s established new rules that require all mobile handsets, such as smartphones, to be compatible with hearing aids.

Engadget.com explained that the rules will ensure those with hearing loss don’t have to worry about which phones will work with their hearing aids. Phones must be compatible with hearing aids and vice versa.

The FCC also said the rule requires all new mobile handsets to meet “volume control benchmarks that ensure clear audio for the listener by allowing them to increase a mobile handset’s audio volume without introducing distortion.”

The FCC said there would be a transition period before the rule goes into effect.
