Drones searching for Hawari; Deaf man on “90 Day Fiancé”

*Correction: Azim Afif Ishak is not a sherpa guide, but the team leader of the Malaysia Everest (ME2023) expedition. Hawari was a part of the ME2023 expedition.

Drones searching for deaf mountaineer Muhammad Hawari Hashim

Here is an update on the search for the missing deaf Malaysian mountaineer Muhammad Hawari Hashim, who disappeared the day after summiting Everest on May 18.

Azim Afif Ishak, one of the sherpa guides who was involved with Hawari’s trip and is currently working to find him, posted images on Instagram of him and others operating drones to search for Hawari. Another sherpa guide, Ngaa Tenji, posted an image showing five different sites near the summit of Mt. Everest where they would conduct their “final searching” for Hawari.

Azim told the “New Straits Times,” that they did not find Hawari after searching Camps Two and Three. Now they are searching Camp Four via drones. There are only two days left before the search has to be called off.

Azim said, “We haven’t given up hope and will continue the search until Wednesday. Only then will any decision be made on whether to continue or end the operation.”

Now in separate but related news, there were several news outlets that highlighted a rescue of an injured Malaysian climber on Everest. Some in the deaf community thought it was Hawari, but it is not him. I already explained this in a news update last week. The climber’s name is T. Ravichandran and although he is a Malaysian, he was climbing the mountain with a different group from the one Hawari was in.

Hawari is still missing and it seems like we have only two days left for any hope of finding him.
