Doctor charged with attacking deaf Uber driver; NYSD New Superintendent is Dr. Santini
Doctor charged with attacking deaf Uber driver
Here are two Deaf News briefs.
KY3 News in Springfield, Missouri reported that a plastic surgeon named Dr. Bharat Shah was charged with third-degree assault for attacking and choking his Uber driver, who is deaf, on May 7.
KY3 News did not identify the deaf driver. The report said according to a police report, the doctor made a 911 call around 12:30 a.m. to say that his driver wouldn’t stop and was hitting him. The doctor said in the call that he would “kill the driver.”
Police said they talked with the deaf driver via written statements. The driver explained that he picked up Shah at a downtown bar and as he was driving home, the doctor “wrapped his arm” around his neck and “began to choke him.” He said he passed out for a brief time but woke up, stopped the car, and got out.
Police said Shah admitted to choking the driver and that he thought he wouldn’t make it home. Shah’s attorney told KY3 News that his client is “truly embarrassed” and that they didn’t realize the driver was deaf.
So it seems like there was some kind of miscommunication in the car that became violent. Shah is now charged with third-degree assault.
Shah has a private practice in Springfield. His website shows that he has 8 people on his staff and offers a range of plastic surgery services. KY3 News said he also had privileges at a local hospital but it is currently suspended after his charge.

NYSD announces Dr. Joseph Santini as new superintendent
Last week the New York School for the Deaf, as known as Fanwood, announced that they have selected Dr. Joseph Santini, who is deaf, as its next superintendent.
NYSD Board of Trustees President Alexis Kashar said in a video that Dr. Santini “comes to us from the Clerc Center where he’s currently the Director of Instruction (and Equity)” and that he has a PhD in Education.
Dr. Santini said he is looking forward to joining Fanwood this summer.
NYSD said the search began in September 2021 and that it worked with Innivee Strategies to evaluate applicants and conduct on-campus meetings and interviews with finalists before choosing Dr. Santini.
The previous superintendent of NYSD was Dr. Bradley Porche, who left in June 2021 and is currently an administrator at the Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf.
That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
