December 15 political news briefs

Here are today’s political news briefs.

It is official — Joe Biden will be the 46th president. The Electoral College has confirmed Biden’s 306 electoral votes. The state vote totals put Biden well ahead of President Donald Trump’s 232. The numbers confirm what media outlets have long projected a few days after the election on November 3rd. It was projected and it is now confirmed.

Biden gave a speech last night in which he said the results show a clear victory. He said people can see that the election was free and fair. He said the Trump side lost 80 election-related lawsuits and lost two cases before the Supreme Court. Biden said the heart of our democracy is respecting the will of the people even when we find those results hard to accept. Biden said 4 years ago, it was his job and responsibility as vice-president to announce the electoral college results that gave Trump a victory. Biden said he will be president for all Americans and his priority now is to get the pandemic under control, to get people vaccinated, and to get our economy back on track.

Today Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) said on the Senate floor a “congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.” NBC News reported that McConnell warned Republican senators to not object to the election results.

President Trump tweeted today that there is tremendous evidence on voter fraud. He is still retweeting people who said Trump is the winner of the 2020 election.

Attorney General William Barr will be resigning before Christmas. He said a few weeks ago that the Department of Justice did not find evidence of widespread fraud.

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a statement today to congratulate Joe Biden on his election victory.

This afternoon there were news reports that said Biden would nominate Pete Buttigieg to be the secretary of transportation. We remember him as one of Biden’s main rivals during the primaries. This nomination is historic because Buttigieg will be the first openly gay person to be nominated for a cabinet position.

That is all the political news for today.
