December 12 Top News Briefs
Here are three top news briefs for Thursday, December 12.
The first one is about the Jersey City kosher supermarket shooting. There was a deadly attack on Tuesday in Jersey City, New Jersey, leaving 6 people dead: three victims, one detective, and two suspects. One victim was the owner of the supermarket, the other victim was an employee, both of them were members of a local Orthodox community, and the third victim was a shopper.
The two suspects are identified as David N. Anderson, 47, and Francine Graham, 50.
On Tuesday at noon, the suspects shot Detective Joseph Seals at Bayview Cemetery and then they drove a mile to the kosher supermarket, got out of the van with two long rifles and began shooting in the store. There were police officers nearby that came to the scene and a massive shootout began between the suspects and the police that lasted nearly three hours before both of the suspects died. A pipe bomb was found later in a U-Haul van.
At first, investigators thought it might have been a random crime, but after seeing a surveillance video, it seems that the kosher store was marked for violence so there is a raised suspicion that this is an act of hate crime. Local and state officials say it is investigated as an anti-Semitic hate crime.
The second news -- Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old climate change activist from Sweden, was named Person of the Year for 2019 by Time magazine.
This is the first time that Time magazine has honored a teenager. She is the youngest person to be honored.
Thunberg spoke before the United Nations Climate Action Summit this year and has become a symbol of activism for many young people across the world.
President Donald Trump tweeted that Greta needs to chill, work on her anger management and see a good old fashioned movie with a friend. Thunberg responded by changing her Twitter profile information by saying she is working on her anger management, currently chilling, and watching a movie with a friend.
A few finalists for Person of the Year 2019 were President Trump, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and the protestors confronting the Chinese government in Hong Kong.
The third news -- The United Kingdom had an election today and early results say Prime Minister Boris Johnson has a large lead and it seems like he will win a clear majority and control of the government. Boris is a Conservative and wants to achieve a Brexit from the European Union.
That is all for today. See you later and stay with the light!
