Deaf woman killed in hit-and-run incident in Bronx

A 56-year-old Deaf woman named Yva Gonzalez was tragically killed in a hit-and-run crash in the Bronx on December 6.

Local news reports said Yva was crossing a street in front of the Montefiore Westchester Square Campus medical center when she was struck by a white tow truck shortly before midnight. The driver did not stop and sped away from the scene. Staff from the medical center ran out to provide aid to Yva, who suffered severe head trauma. Tragically, she was pronounced dead.

The New York Police Department is investigating the crash but so far have not released any image of the tow truck or further information regarding the suspected driver.

Yva’s niece, Nadgeena Jerome, said in a message to “The Daily Moth” that there would be a vigil with the Deaf community, family, friends, and local leaders on Friday, December 20 outside where Yva was struck at Montefiore Westchester Square Hospital at 4:30 to 5:30 pm. Nadgeena said there have been 20 hit-and-run accidents in the Bronx and they don’t want the public to overlook what happened to Yva.

One of Yva’s Deaf friends sent a message to “The Daily Moth” that they were childhood friends from Haiti.

One person posted on Yva’s obituary website expressing sorrow that she is gone and feeling heartbroken that she didn’t get to live out her life and experience her kids’ futures.

An organization in New York City that advocates for safer streets, Transportation Alternatives, said the intersection where Yva was killed was not safe because there are missing crosswalks and cars are allowed to park near where the sidewalk meets the road, which reduces visibility for both pedestrians and drivers.

The organization said they are sending their thoughts to the family and community that is grieving Yva.
