Deaf News: Kendall Div. II Ceremony; EEOC sues tech company for discrimination

Here are two Deaf News Briefs.

Kendall School Division II graduation ceremony

The first: Gallaudet University said it would hold a graduation ceremony on July 22 to honor the 23 Black Deaf students and four Black teachers of the Kendall School Division II, which was a segregated private elementary school for Black Deaf students that operated on Gallaudet’s campus from 1952 to 1954.

Gallaudet said at this graduation ceremony, the students and their descendants will receive high school diplomas. The ceremony is hosted by Gallaudet’s Center for Black Deaf Studies. Gallaudet said this is a significant part of the university’s “ongoing commitment to acknowledge and own its past racial and educational injustices.”

Gallaudet said two of the three living Kendall School Division II students and family members of several deceased students and teachers are expected to attend the ceremony. For more information and more history behind the school, the link to a press release is in the transcript.

EEOC sues tech company for discriminating against deaf applicant

The EEOC said in a press release that it is suing a large technology company in Rochester called Tech Mahindra for allegedly discriminating against a deaf applicant. The EEOC said the company abruptly ended an interview for an engineering role when they realized the deaf applicant, Robert Rademacher, was deaf and using a sign language interpreter.

The EEOC said the company told the deaf applicant that he was not going to get the job and then emailed him that although he had the perfect skill set for the job, it would be a challenge having an interpreter onsite. The applicant explained that they didn’t need an onsite interpreter as they could use a virtual interpreter, but he was denied the job.

The EEOC said it is a violation of the ADA, which prohibits employers from discriminating against qualified applicants based on their disability. The lawsuit seeks back pay, compensatory damages, and punitive damages for the applicant.
