Deaf News: Deaf dancer; CSDR film; NYC captioning

Here are three Deaf News briefs.

Deaf British actress Rose Ayling-Ellis won the British dancing competition “Strictly Come Dancing” on Saturday night with her dancing partner Giovanni Pernice. It is the first time a deaf person has won the competition in England. The dancing competition is similar to the U.S.’ Dancing With the Stars, in which Nyle DiMarco won in 2016. There are a lot of happy and emotional reactions in “deaf U.K.” over the win. Rose said in an interview that she couldn’t stop crying after she won and hugged her mother. Rose is an actress on a British soap opera called EastEnders.

Deadline reported that a producer named Freddy Wexler is collaborating with DJ Kurs, the artistic director of Deaf West Theatre, to develop a feature film based on CSD Riverside’s successful football season in which they reached a state sectional championship game. The film will be based on the life story of head coach Keith Adams and his two sons, Kaden and Trevin, who played on the team.

A bill to require movie theaters in New York City to provide open captions for a portion of screenings has passed out of the New York City Council, according to an announcement from open captioning activist Jamie Berke on Change.org. Almost 25,000 people signed a petition in support of the bill. Berke explained that the bill would require any theater offering more than 10 screenings per week to offer open captions for at least 25% of screenings of movies that have 4 or more showings per week. Berke said this law only applies to New York City, not the state or any other city in the state.

The bill was introduced by New York City Council member Helen Rosenthal, who said, “Providing open captioning is a simple, inexpensive, and more sanitary alternative for cinema operators…” and “This groundbreaking bill is the result of years of effort by the deaf and hard of hearing community.”

That’s the three Deaf News briefs for today.
