Deaf News Briefs: Study recommends ASL for children waiting for CIs; CODA soldier teaching ASL
Study recommends exposing deaf children to sign language before and after cochlear implantation
Here are two Deaf News briefs.
The first is an article from MedicalXpress that features a study that recommends exposing deaf children to sign language before and after cochlear implantation.
The study said many researchers and clinicians advise the parents of a deaf child waiting for a cochlear implant to avoid sign language and focus exclusively on spoken language out of concerns that sign language would interfere with the learning of spoken language.
But a study by a Ph.D. student at The Université de Montréal, Audrey Delcenserie, found that exposing deaf children to sign language before and after cochlear implantation has positive effects on spoken language and the ability to remember the sounds used in words, which is known as phonological memory.
The study found that early exposure to sign language improved the child’s spoken vocabulary and expressive grammar.
Delcenserie encouraged parents to learn and expose their deaf child to sign language even if the child will receive a cochlear implant to protect the deaf child from language deprivation.

National Guard feature on CODA soldier teaching ASL classes overseas
The second news is a feature by the National Guard that spotlights a CODA service member, U.S. Army Sgt. Ashley Brown.
She is serving in an undisclosed location in the U.S. Central Command, which covers parts of the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia.
Her parents are Jenene and Robin Johnson.
The article said Brown has served in the Minnesota National Guard for over 10 years and is now on her first deployment. After she arrived to her location, she went to the Education Center and saw that they were looking for volunteers to teach several language classes.
Brown offered to teach ASL classes to fellow service members and the classes filled up. Brown said her fellow soldiers were eager to learn. Brown said she plans to expand her ASL classes.
So, this is a nice feature for a CODA member of the military.
That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
