Deaf News Briefs: Matlin in “New Amsterdam;” Gallaudet football in playoffs

Marlee Matlin to appear as guest star on “New Amsterdam”

Here are two Deaf News briefs. The first: People reported that Marlee Matlin will appear as a guest star in an upcoming episode of “New Amsterdam,” the NBC medical drama that features a deaf doctor who is cast by Sandra Mae Frank. The show releases new episodes on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. ET but there was no episode last night due to the coverage of the midterm elections. Regular programming will return next week but it is not yet revealed which night the episode with Matlin’s character will be released.

People revealed that Matlin’s role is a mentor to Frank’s character, Dr. Elizabeth Wilder and that she will make “an appealing offer” that will force Dr. Wilder to make a “very difficult decision.”

Frank told People that she was excited to work with Matlin again and that she’s worked with her four times in the past. Frank said she feels “in (her) element” with Matlin because they both can communicate and work together in their first language, ASL.

Gallaudet football team in postseason after winning ECFC title

The second Deaf News brief: Gallaudet University’s football team won the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) championship by defeating Alfred State College 36-22 on Saturday to finish their season with a 7-2 record. It is Gallaudet’s second ECFC title with their first title coming in 2013.

Gallaudet has qualified for the NCAA Division III football championship tournament.

Gallaudet Athletics reported that the team is now waiting for the “NCAA selection show on Sunday, Nov. 13 to find out where they play in the first round on Saturday, Nov. 19.”
