Gallaudet establishes National Beacon Center
The second Deaf News brief: Gallaudet University announced in a news article written by Robert Weinstock that the university will establish a “National Beacon Center” for the Advancement of Early Language Acquisition for Deaf Children. It will be led by Tawny Holmes Hlibok.
The article explained that Gallaudet “has entered into a five-year, $3.75 million cooperative agreement with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB).” The MCHB is a part of the federal agency Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and its mission is to strengthen public health systems to meet the needs of America’s mothers, children and their families.
The article explained that Gallaudet’s “National Beacon Center” is one of three centers nationwide that receive funding to advance Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) services “so that deaf and hard of hearing newborns, infants, and young children up to age 3 receive appropriate supports and timely services to improve language acquisition outcomes.”
