Deaf News Briefs: “Flash Before the Bang;” Apple Live Speech Feature

Here are two Deaf News briefs.

Russell Harvard, Daniel Durant to star in “Flash Before the Bang”

The first is a report from “Deadline” that a deaf writer and director named Jevon Whetter is leading an upcoming film called “Flash Before the Bang,” which is about the Oregon School for the Deaf’s unprecedented state championship victory in track and field in 1986. Whetter was a part of that team.

The film will star deaf actors Russell Harvard and Daniel Durant. Another star is Jessica Alba. She will be an executive producer, along with other Hollywood stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

“Deadline” said production is due to begin in September in Georgia. More than half of the characters in the cast will be deaf and be portrayed by deaf actors.

Jevon’s brother Delbert, who is also deaf, is a producer.

Apple’s “Live Speech” feature

The second Deaf News brief is an announcement from Apple that it will add a feature to iPhones and iPads that will allow people who don’t speak with their voices to type text and have the device voice it. The feature is called “Live Speech.” It can be used during FaceTime calls, phone calls, or in-person conversations.

Apple also announced that it would host a “Today at Apple” session with ASL performer Justina Miles and deaf musician Warren “Wawa” Snipe at the Apple Carnegie Library in D.C. on May 18 in support of Global Accessibility Awareness Day. You can sign up for the event at the link in the transcript.
