Deaf News Briefs: “Echo” top show on Disney+; Deaf trucker awarded $335k
Here are two Deaf News briefs.
“Echo” top show on Disney+
The first: “Echo,” the Marvel series starring Deaf actress Alaqua Cox, is the No. 1 show on both the Disney+ and Hulu platforms, according to a report from Deadline. The report said there are no specific numbers, but “Echo” is doing better than some of the consistently top-performing titles. Nice! This definitely shows once again that authentic Deaf representation, both in front of and behind the cameras, can deliver positive results.
Several episodes were co-written by Deaf writers/actors Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern.

Deaf trucker awarded $335k
The second news brief: news reports said a federal judge has ordered trucking company Werner to pay deaf driver Victor Robinson about $335,000 to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit. In September, a jury who heard the EEOC’s case against Werner awarded Robinson $36 million. It is a staggering amount, but it was not realistic because there are laws that limit the payout to $300,000. Last Wednesday, U.S. District Judge John Gerrard gave Robinson the maximum amount of $300,000 plus $35,682 in lost wages. It is still a substantial victory for Robinson, who graduated from a Werner-owned truck driving school, obtained a hearing exemption to drive trucks, but was rejected from a job with Werner.
