Deaf News Briefs: “Echo” to have its own series; CSD Riverside football team advances
Here are two Deaf News briefs.
Disney Plus announced on Friday that the Marvel character Maya Lopez / Echo, who is cast by a deaf and disabled Native American actress Alaqua Cox, will have her own original series called “Echo.” The character hasn’t been revealed on Disney+ yet but it is apparent that Disney loves the character and believes in it enough to grant its own series.
Echo/Cox will make their first appearance in Disney Plus’ “Hawkeye” series on November 24 that has Jeremy Renner in the lead role of Clint Barton/Hawkeye. I’ve covered this in previous news reports.
“Inverse” reported that the “Echo” series is currently being written and may go into production in 2022 with its release sometime in 2023. This is a big deal, because it’s a TV series that has a deaf character as its lead role. Congratulations to Alaqua Cox.
Another big deal about this series is that it will include two deaf writers, Shoshannah Stern and Josh Feldman, who is known for their Sundance show, “This Close.”

The California School for the Deaf, Riverside 8-man football team won their CIF Division 2 state playoff game on Friday by defeating the Desert Christian Knights 84-12 to add to their unbeaten streak this season. According to the CIF playoffs bracket, CSDR is scheduled to play at Avalon on Friday, November 19. Whoever wins that game will play for the state championship.
The CSDR team was featured in the New York Times with the headline, “Underdog No More, a Deaf Football Team Takes California by Storm.” It featured the team’s head coach Keith Adams and described the joy that the team has with its undefeated season after several years of losing seasons.
