Deaf News briefs: Deaflympics in Brazil; CSDB Superintendent resigns

Here are two Deaf News briefs.

Deaflympics in Brazil

The first is an announcement that The Daily Moth is collaborating with the USADSF to provide coverage of the 2022 Summer Deaflympic Games in Caxias do Sul, Brazil. The opening date is May 1 and the closing date is May 15.

As I am signing this video, many members of Team USA are at the Miami International Airport getting ready to depart with their bags and equipment. U.S. athletes will be competing in track and field, badminton, cycling, judo, swimming, Taekwondo, wrestling, volleyball, tennis, and football (soccer).

Daily Moth reporters Renca Dunn and Callie Frye will be onsite in Brazil with USADSF’s media team for the next two weeks and posting pictures and results throughout the day on Instagram stories. I encourage you to follow both @USADSF and @thedailymoth on Instagram to check out the posts through the day. We will post a recap video of all the posts throughout the day and competition results on Daily Moth Facebook, YouTube, and website during the nights. So you can either follow Instagram stories during the day or wait until the nighttime recap.

On the Deaflympics.com website, it states that a total of 819 athletes from 41 countries are competing.

CSDB Superintendent resigns

The second Deaf News brief is a report from “The Gazette” in Colorado Springs that the superintendent of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind has resigned.

The superintendent’s name is Nancy Benham and she is hearing. “The Gazette” said the school board accepted her resignation in a special meeting on Thursday. The reason for the resignation was not disclosed. A board member named Allan Ward told “The Gazette” that the board was put in an awkward spot, but they will be fine. The former director of curriculum Tera Wilkins will take over as interim superintendent.

Benham became the school superintendent in 2019 and there was controversy from the Deaf community in Colorado over her hiring because she was not a deaf leader. Benham can sign in ASL and has deaf children. The resignation means that CSDB might open up a new search for a superintendent.

That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
