Deaf Taiwanese bowler passes away after competition; Australian goalie has hearing loss

Here are two Deaf News briefs.

Deaf Taiwanese bowler passes away after competition

The first is a report from the Taiwan News that a Deaf Taiwanese bowler passed away on a return flight from the World Deaf Bowling Championships in Germany on Monday.

The report said “one of the bowlers experienced breathing complications aboard a return flight from Dubai to Taipei on Monday. The bowler passed out while in the bathroom and was discovered by a flight attendant. First aid was given and a doctor was on board and took over emergency care, but after 40 minutes of treatment, the bowler still had no vital signs.”

The article did not identify the person who died. It said the Taiwanese Sports Administration Deputy Director-General met with the Chinese Taipei Deaf Sports Federation Secretary-General Chao Yu-ping met at the airport today. Because the athlete was traveling as a member of a national team, the deceased person’s family is eligible to get the equivalent of $90,000 in compensation from the government.

Our condolences go out to the Taiwanese Deaf community and to the individual's family.

Australian goalie Mackenzie Arnold has hearing loss

Australia’s women’s national football (soccer) team is in the semifinals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The goalie, Mackenzie Arnold, has hearing loss and uses hearing aids.

Arnold posted on Instagram in April a video of her going to a clinic to get a hearing aid. ESPN said her older brother also has hearing loss. Arnold said she doesn’t wear her hearing aids during matches.

So this is an interesting fact if you follow the Women’s World Cup. The Australian women’s national team is called the Matildas. They will play against England at 6:00 a.m. EST on Wednesday for a spot in the championship match against Spain, who defeated Sweden today.

That’s the two Deaf News briefs for today.
