Deaf News Briefs: Deaf Austin Theater’s special show; Private Jones musical show

Renca Dunn, Daily Moth Reporter: We have two Deaf news briefs related to theater.

The first one is that Deaf Austin Theater (DAT) in Austin, Texas will be hosting a special show called “Shake It Up” on February 25th and they partnered with a non-profit organization, Off-the-Grid Missions. All of the proceedings will go directly to OTG.

The goal is to raise awareness about OTG and how this fundraiser show will help OTG continue its cause to bring humanitarian aid to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in disasters worldwide.

This show will have well-known performers such as Russell Harvard, Heba Toulan, Sandra Mae Frank, and Leila Hanaumi. If you are in the area, you can purchase your ticket to see the show in person, but be aware that there is limited seating. If you cannot come in person, live streaming is available for anyone to purchase a ticket for $20.

We have linked DAT’s Instagram account and their website in this transcript so you can look for more information.

The second one is a musical show, a stage performance, called “Private Jones.” It is inspired by the story of a deaf Welsh sniper in World War I. It is a musical adventure that includes humor, heart-felt moments of friendship, and the cost of war.

The show is at the Signature Theater in Arlington, Virginia. This show has a mixture of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and hearing actors. Gomer Jones, the deaf soldier is cast by an actor named Johnny Link, who is hard of hearing himself and he is known for his role with Netflix’s series “Life With the Walter Boys.”

Other Deaf actors include Amelia Hensley from the “Spring Awakening” Broadway play and Dickie Drew Hearts from “Tales of the City” series. They are also involved in the musical. The performance has a combination of spoken English, American Sign Language and British Sign Language.

The performances started on February 6th and will end on March 10th. For the show, closed captioning is provided through a specific app, and ASL interpretation is also provided on specific dates. We have included a link to their website in this transcript for more information and to purchase tickets to see the show in person if you are interested.
