Deaf Missouri woman tragically killed by 3 dogs

Several news outlets in St. Louis, Missouri reported that three dogs attacked a 62-year-old Deaf woman, Gladys Anthony, and mauled her to death. The dogs escaped from their owners’ home. This happened Wednesday night.

News reports explained that Gladys had arrived home from work as a janitor at a school and let her family’s dogs out in the backyard. The three loose dogs came under Gladys’ backyard fence and attacked her dogs and then attacked Gladys.

Gladys’ brother, John Jenkins, said the dogs were pit bulls and were vicious.

Gladys’ husband, who is 73, got a gun and fired shots to try and scare the dogs away but the gun jammed. The husband tried using a broom against the dogs.

Police officers responded to the scene and used pepper spray to disperse the dogs.

Police officers tried to help Gladys stop the bleeding with tourniquets until EMS crews arrived. She was rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery but died from her injuries.

Gladys’ daughter, Keshia, said she sustained serious injuries on her arm and legs.

Gladys’ husband was also injured in his arm and legs but is expected to recover. He is currently at a hospital.

News images showed that there was a lot of blood on the snow-covered backyard of Gladys’ home.

News reports said the dogs belonged to a nearby home. Police removed the dogs from their 54-year-old owner and it is now up to city officials to decide whether the dogs should be euthanized.

STLToday.com did an interview with the owner of the pit bulls, Keith Mason. He said it was a tragic accident and that he feels sorry. He explained that he usually chains up his dogs but due to ice in the backyard, he left his dogs inside. He said he was not home on Wednesday night, but his son was, and the dogs somehow got out of the back door. Mason said his dogs had never bitten anyone and he never saw this coming. Mason said he doesn’t think it would be fair if he got his dogs back — meaning he expects the dogs to be euthanized.

News reports said the situation is under investigation and that whether the owner faces charges depends on the investigation and the St. Louis City circuit attorney.

Keshia, Gladys’ daughter, said she’s mourning and is feeling the grief of what it feels like to be without a mother.

John, Gladys’ brother, said he’s lost his only sibling and that it’s very painful.

A person on Facebook said Gladys graduated from the Missouri School for the Deaf in 1981.
