Deaf Haitians need help after earthquake
The death toll from the earthquake on Saturday in Haiti has increased to about 2,200 people, according to Axios. News reports say there are tens of thousands of people who are left homeless with many injured.
I was able to reach out to two deaf Haitians and a Coda Haitian this week and was in touch with a nonprofit organization that works in Haiti — Off-The-Grid Missions.
I was asked to censor the identities of the men to protect them during this high-risk situation.
One of the men said it is very sad what is happening and that they will check the region of Les Cayes, in the southern part of Haiti, to see the amount of deaf victims and survivors.
The second person said sometimes deaf people miss out on information on how to protect themselves or broadcasts from the government because there are no interpreters in the southern part of Haiti.
The third person said deaf people in the south need tents, beds, food, drink, and other things. The person said people can donate to Off-The-Grid Missions.
OTG said they are accepting donations for relief for deaf people in Haiti at www.offthegridmissions.org. They’ve shared several images of the earthquake damage from their contacts. Here they are.

OTG said if people want to purchase items to donate, they can via an Amazon Wishlist they’ve created that includes items such as tents, medical supplies, and headlamps. OTG said they hope to deploy a team to Haiti soon but would have to be careful because of gang violence.
So, right now, it is not known how many deaf people are affected by the earthquake, but the situation is dire. News reports say there are many people in the southern region who are frustrated and angry at the slow pace of aid, which was delayed further by Tropical Storm Grace that caused bad weather earlier this week.
