Deaf father Dmitry Putilov killed in cycling hit-and-run incident

A Deaf father, Dmitry Putilov, was tragically killed when he was hit by a car while cycling with his two young sons in downtown Oakland on June 16, according to a GoFundMe set up to cover the costs of cremation fees. Both the sons, ages 8 and 6, were not injured. Putilov was 42.

A person who knew Putilov sent me a CBS Bay Area article that covered the incident. It said, “Shortly before 8:30 p.m., the Oakland man was riding his bike on Jefferson Street near 14th Street when he was hit by a vehicle that was traveling in the same direction, according to Oakland police. The cyclist was riding in a designated bike lane at the time, police said. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.” Police do not know who the driver is and have asked the public to share any information they have.

The GoFundMe page said as of yesterday, the “reckless driver has not been found.”

The East Bay Times said police described the vehicle that struck Putilov as a “black four-door Infiniti.” The vehicle did not stop and was last seen driving westbound on 14th street. There is now a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the driver.

The GoFundMe page said Putilov was born in the Soviet Union and immigrated to Europe and then moved to the U.S. He was known for his “unique construction skills” and would help his friends with remodeling their homes and worked at a local construction company.

The GoFundMe said Putilov’s family would hold cremation services this month and do the memorial service later this year and are asking for help to cover the costs.

Oakland City Councilmember Sheng Thao, who is also running for Oakland mayor, tweeted after the incident that “The death on 14th street was entirely preventable.” She called on the city council to approve a project to improve safety on 14th street.

Many people on social media expressed grief for Putilov’s untimely death.
