Deaf Entertainment Briefs
Jules Dameron to direct “Deaf President Now”
Here are two deaf entertainment news briefs.
The first: Deadline reported last week that deaf film director Jules Dameron *will write and direct a new movie, “Deaf President Now,” which will be based on the 1988 protests at Gallaudet University. The film is now casting and will begin production later this year.
Dameron told Deadline that she hopes the story will empower deaf people, particularly deaf women.
Deadline explained that Dameron worked on this project with co-producer Jackie Roth, a deaf actress and producer.
This project is a separate one from Nyle DiMarco and Concordia Studios’ project on the same Deaf President Now protest. This project was announced in July 2020.
This means that there are two different projects about the DPN protests in the works at the same time.

Troy Kotsur, CODA hauls in more awards
Deaf actor Troy Kotsur and the film “CODA” have continued to haul in more awards. Last week during the Hollywood Critics Association awards, Kotsur won the Best Supporting Actor award and the film CODA won the Best Picture award. Director Siân Heder won Best Adapted Screenplay and the cast of CODA won the Spotlight Award.
On Sunday, Kotsur won the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male actor. So Kotsur is getting a lot of award hardware and leading the way for CODA’s recognition during the awards season.
That’s the two deaf entertainment news briefs for today.
*Correction/Clarification: Jules Dameron has already written the script for “Deaf President Now” and will direct it. The news report incorrectly said “Jules will write…”
