Daily Moth News from Camp Isola Bella

Callie Frye: Hi! I’m here at Camp Isola Bella. I am teaching a “The Daily Moth” class with the teen campers. They are 13 to 17 years old. They will deliver the news today. I hope you enjoy it!

Perc: Hello. It is July 20. We will share today’s top stories.

German police hunt for lioness near Berlin

Kalena: German police have urged residents who live near Berlin to stay indoors, as they scoured the area for a wild lioness on the loose. The police said, “We ask you not to leave your houses and pets should also remain indoors.”

Police first issued the alarm in the early morning hours on Thursday, after two people saw what happened to be a lioness chasing a wild boar down a street. They recorded a video on their phones and discovered that it was probably a lioness.

No animal parks, zoos or circuses are missing an animal of this kind, the officials told the local news.

Auckland Shooting

Perc: New Zealand is in mourning after a shooting in Auckland left two people dead, hours before the city opened the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Six other people, including police officers, were injured and the gunman is also dead after the incident on Thursday morning. The shooter, 24-year-old Matu Tangi Matua Reid, moved through the building site firing at the crowd with a pump-action shotgun.

The shooter was known to police and had a history of family violence and mental health issues. He did not have a license to own a firearm. Police will look specifically into how the man got hold of a fireman despite New Zealand’s strict gun control laws.

Canada wildfires

Zariella: Canada’s worst-ever wildfire season has caused dangerous smoke for months. This year is the most land ever burned by wildfires in Canada’s history. By this week, some 42,000 square miles or 109,000 square kilometers had burned – an area roughly equivalent to the US state of Virginia.

About 900 fires in Canada were actively burning, with only about one-fifth considered under control. The wildfires are disproportionately affecting Canada’s Indigenous communities and humans are not the only creatures affected by fire. Wild animals are often displaced.

Tornado rips through North Carolina

Brianna: Local news reported a tornado that ripped apart homes and severely damaged a Pfizer facility near Rocky Mount in North Carolina on Wednesday morning. Survey teams and experts have found tornado damage indicative of winds up to 150 mph.

Officials later said at least 16 people were hurt.

The Pfizer plant stores large quantities of medicine and they were strewn across the facility and damaged through the rain and the wind. This could lead to medicine shortages.

Ukraine war updates

Evangeline: After Russia withdrew from the Ukraine grain deal, Russia has, for three nights in a row, launched airstrikes against the Ukrainian city of Odessa. Odessa is near the water and there are boats around.

Ukrainian defenses were only able to down just over a quarter of the cruise missiles launched.

Ukrainian President Zelensky has accused Russia of seeking to cripple Ukraine’s ability to export grain.

The US committed to providing Ukraine with more air defense systems and attack drones in a $1.3 billion aid package announced Wednesday.

4-year-old girl awarded $800K over McDonald incident

Henry: A South Florida jury on Thursday found that McDonald’s and franchise owner Upchurch Foods liable for failing to properly warn or provide reasonable instructions on the possible harm from a hot piece of McNuggets. They have awarded $800,000 in damages that left a young girl, Olivia Caraballo, severely burned.

The suit was filed in 2019 against McDonald’s and Upchurch Foods when dangerously hot chicken nuggets from a Happy Meal fell onto a 4-year-old’s lap and burned her leg. It caused second-degree burns around her thighs, leaving her disfigured and scarred.

NYC subway using AI to combat fare evasion

Channing: The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), which oversees New York City’s public transportation, reported that the MTA lost $690 million to fare evasion in 2022. In response, they installed surveillance software that uses artificial intelligence to spot people evading fares and has been quietly rolled out to some of New York City’s subway stations.

An MTA spokesperson said the AI system doesn’t send information about fare evaders to New York police. When they were asked if that policy would change, they declined to comment. They added the system to track evasion and see how much money is involved. For instance, how many people are evading the fare and how are they doing it?
