Convo partners with New York City transit to provide interpreters via smartphones

Convo said in a press release that it is now in a pilot program with the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), which operates New York City’s subway system, to provide Deaf residents and travelers with interpreters to communicate with MTA workers at transit locations throughout the NY and NJ metropolitan areas. It works by having the customers scan their smartphones on a QR code at kiosks where MTA workers are – the QR code will lead the customer to be able to connect with an interpreter through their smartphones, where they can talk with the MTA worker. The service is called “Convo Access.”

Convo CEO Jarrod Musano said the service would allow employees and riders to greet each other and have conversations beyond directions and train times. MTA’s Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo said this is “universal access.”

News12 New York explained that the pilot program, which is free to users, runs through November and that the MTA is encouraging riders to provide feedback.
