Biden “proud” to have hired full-time ASL interpreters

President Joe Biden wrote a nice letter on December 10 to mark National Clerc and Gallaudet Week.

Biden said he is “proud to become the first President to hire full-time ASL interpreters, both Deaf and hearing, to join my White House staff and interpret every briefing, speech, and recorded event.”

Gallaudet’s Instagram page recognized the letter and explained that Thomas H. Gallaudet’s birthday is December 10.

Elsie Sue Stecker, who is one of the most well-known Deaf interpreters for the White House, posted that there are five Gallaudet alumni working at the Biden-Harris White House.

It is not known if President-elect Donald Trump will continue to provide ASL interpreters for White House-related activities. The Trump administration did provide interpreters during his first term for coronavirus briefings, but that came only after a NAD lawsuit and a judge’s order. Since we are not living in a pandemic anymore, we’ll see if they will still provide interpreters.
