The U.S. Women’s National Team was the two-peat defending champions and was expected to make a deep run into this year’s tournament in Australia and New Zealand, but the team has struggled to score goals.

Sweden now moves on to play against Japan on Friday in the quarterfinals. The final will be on August 20.

Twitch streamer’s giveaway turns into chaos

On Friday afternoon, Kai Cenat, who is popular for his comedic YouTube videos and Twitch streams, announced that he would be giving away free PS5s and many $100 gift cards at Union Square in New York City.

The park was full of people who hoped to get something and when Cenat arrived, he was swarmed. His SUV drove away with multiple people clinging on it. The crowd of people becomes rowdy with people throwing objects or damaging things.

The New York Police Department declared the gathering an unlawful assembly. Cenat was arrested and charged with inciting a riot. He was released and is due to appear in court on August 18th. New York authorities said the event was “unpermitted” and “not sanctioned.”

The NYPD said it arrested about 65 people for rioting. At least 30 of them were juveniles.

Cenat’s team said they apologize to all of those impacted, saying they have never experienced anything like this and now realize the power they possess with the amount of followers they have.

Brawl at Riverfront Park in Alabama

There was a brawl involving over 20 people that happened on the dock at Montgomery, Alabama’s Riverfront Park. Videos of the incident went viral.

Videos showed that when a dock worker, who was dressed similarly to a security guard, told a group of people on a pontoon boat that they couldn’t park at the dock because it was reserved for a large riverboat that was coming shortly, the boaters got angry and started punching at the worker, piling on him. Bystanders then came to help the dock worker, but more boaters came and it turned into a full-on brawl, a melee.

The dock worker and others who helped him were black, while the boaters were white, so the fight looked like it was a “black group” fighting with a “white group.” Police officers responded to the brawl but struggled to quickly stop the fighting. The situation finally stopped with several people arrested.

Montgomery’s mayor said police detained several “reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job.” Police said they had four active warrants with a possibility of more warrants after reviewing additional videos.

Tou Thao sentenced nearly 5 years

Tou Thao, the former Minneapolis police officer who held back concerned bystanders while three other officers kneeled on the neck and body of George Floyd, was sentenced to almost five years on a state charge of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

ABC News said Thao’s sentence will run concurrently with a 3 ½ year sentence for his separate conviction on a federal civil rights charge.

Glacial break causes major flooding in Alaska

At least two homes near Juneau, Alaska fell apart and crashed into floodwaters due to a “glacial lake outburst flood.” ABC News explained that this occurs when a frozen dam containing a glacial lake breaks.

The break caused the Mendenhall River to rise dramatically and a video shows a home crashing into the river. An official said another home was lost, one was partially damaged, and that there are several other homes and a condo building that is at risk of damage.

A worker with the National Weather Service in Juneau said they didn’t even think that this was possible. They said on the FEMA scale, there was less than a 1% chance of that level of flooding occurring.

That is all the top stories for today. See you tomorrow and stay with the light.
