I am on a trip this week and am doing news videos in a different room than my usual studio. Here are today’s top stories.
Tropical Storm Hilary brings heavy rains
Tropical Storm Hilary brought heavy rains to Mexico and Southern California on Sunday. It is the first tropical storm to hit the area in over 80 years. One person in Mexico drowned when their vehicle was swept away by an overflowing stream.
In California, emergency crews rescued several people from flooding rivers. There are reports of mudslides and downed power lines.
School districts across Southern California said campuses would be closed today.
The storm will continue to move northward in California and across Nevada, bringing more rain.
In separate news, Southern California had a 5.1 magnitude earthquake not far away from Los Angeles. There were no reports of major damage or injury.
Spain wins Women’s World Cup
Spain won the Women’s World Cup on Sunday by defeating England 1-0. It is Spain’s first-ever Women’s World Cup title.
The scorer of the game’s sole goal is Olga Carmona. She said after the game that she found out that her father passed away. It is not known exactly what happened. She said she knows that her father was watching her play the game and that he is proud of her.
Three die after drinking milkshakes with Listeria
CNN reported that three people died after drinking milkshakes from a restaurant in Tacoma, Washington and that investigators determined it was due to ice cream machines not being cleaned properly. The machines had the dangerous Listeria bacteria on them. The restaurant is a Frugals restaurant in Tacoma.
There were three other people who were hospitalized due to an infection from the bacteria. The incidents were between February and July of this year. The ice cream machines were in use until August 7.

Orca at Miami Seaquarium dies
The Miami Seaquarium said its orca Lolita passed away Friday afternoon. It was 57 years old and was supposed to be released into the wild. The Miami Seaquarium said Lolita showed serious signs of discomfort over the past several days and received medical treatment but died from what is believed to be a renal (kidney) condition.
Lolita, who is also called Toki by a Native American tribe based on the coast of Washington state and British Columbia where the animal was first captured around 1970.
Lolita / Toki was supposed to be released back to the ocean in Washington where its relatives live.
Miami’s mayor said that it was “our collective wish” to see Toki in her native waters and is heartbroken to learn of this sudden loss.
Russian spacecraft crashes into the Moon
A Russian robotic spacecraft that planned to land on the Moon this week ended up crashing on the Moon’s surface. It was Russia’s first Moon mission in almost 50 years.
The spacecraft is called Luna-25. Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, said it “ended up in the wrong orbit and ceased to exist.”
India has a mission to the Moon going on, at the same time, and its own spacecraft may attempt to land on the Moon this week.
