ASL 3rd-most popular language other than English

The Modern Language Association (MLA) released a study of college and university enrollments in languages other than English (foreign languages) between fall 2016 and fall 2021.

It shows that American Sign Language (ASL) is the third most-popular language.

So, according to the MLA, about 107,100 students enrolled in ASL courses in 2016. In 2021, that number increased only slightly to about 107,900 students. We can see that ASL’s popularity has stayed consistent for five years.

MLA said ASL enrollment is “an impressive feat in the face of general enrollment decline since 2009.” ASL remained robust.
