Philadelphia Eagles win Super Bowl 59

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles for winning Super Bowl 59 by demolishing Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 after going up 24-0 . Eagles QB Jalen Hurts won the MVP award.

For the Chiefs, their hopes of a storybook ending to the season with a three-peat championship was dashed, but you can bet they’ll work hard to try and come back next year.

President Trump attended the game and was the first sitting president to do so. He was on the sidelines before the game to greet people. The crowd cheered him on. Trump watched the game with New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson and left at halftime.

During the pregame ceremonies, Deaf actor Otis Jones and Deaf actress Stephanie Nogueras were shown on the Fox broadcast for a few brief seconds, which is, unfortunately, normal. They were visible on an ASL livestream on YouTube.

However, they were visible on the stadium’s jumbotron in a dedicated PIP, so everyone in the stadium, including Trump, would have seen them. Maybe he’ll bring back the White House interpreters?

So, congratulations again to the Philadelphia Eagles and it’s going to be a wonderful time for Philadelphia. For NFL fans, which includes me, it is a depressing time with the end of football. But I’m looking forward to watching some basketball.

Super Bowl performer flies Gaza flag

During the Super Bowl halftime performance last night, one of the dancers/performers for Kendrick Lamar’s show stood atop a prop car and unfurled a flag that said, “GAZA” and “SUDAN” to protest the wars going on in these areas.

The man was detained and ejected from the stadium. The NFL said the person would be banned from all NFL stadiums for life and that the person planned the protest by himself without the knowledge of event organizers. Police said the man would not face criminal charges.

Many of us know about the Gaza war and I’ve covered it extensively here on Moth. With Sudan, I’ve not covered this war in detail. I read an explainer on CBS News that said the country has been unstable since an uprising removed its former long-time autocratic president in 2019. In 2021, military generals carried out competing coups. It’s led to a civil war that has killed almost 30,000 people, forced millions to flee, and brought famine.

CBS said activists online have sought to draw attention to both Gaza and Sudan, although both conflicts have different roots and participants.

Trump shares more on Gaza takeover vision

Trump said in an interview with Fox News that in his vision of the U.S. taking ownership of the Gaza Strip, Palestinians would be moved out to neighboring countries and they wouldn’t have the right to return to Gaza after the rubble from Israel’s bombardment is cleared.

Trump said for the Palestinians, they would get several “beautiful and safe communities” elsewhere while the U.S. would own the land currently in Gaza. Trump said he thinks the area should be developed into a Riviera-style area.

The idea had the support of Israel’s Prime Minister but it is opposed by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan — and obviously opposed by the Palestinian residents of Gaza. They have vowed to stay there.

Hamas delays hostage release

Hamas said it would delay the next release of Israeli hostages that was supposed to take place this Saturday with the allegation that Israel violated their ceasefire agreement. A Hamas spokesperson said Israel conducted airstrikes in several areas in Gaza and did not do other certain things.

Israel’s Defense Minister Katz said Hamas’ announcement is a violation of the ceasefire agreement and has ordered the Israeli military to be on alert. Israel said they had to carry out airstrikes because Palestinians entered prohibited areas.

Axios reported that according to an Israeli official, Hamas could be doing this in response to Trump’s remarks on the U.S. taking over Gaza.

President Trump warned Hamas today that if all Israeli hostages are not released by noon on Saturday, then all hell would break loose.

Astronomers studying “city-killer” asteroid

Astronomers with NASA and the European Space Agency are studying an asteroid that could be a “city-killer” if it hits Earth about 8 years from now. Astronomers said the chances that it will actually hit Earth when it approaches on December 2032 are 1 to 1.6%

The asteroid’s name is 2024 YR4. Its size is about the same as a football field.

The European Space Agency said an asteroid of this size does hit Earth every few thousand years and can cause severe damage to a local region. Scientists don’t believe it would be like the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs and caused climate change, but that this asteroid would certainly cause a disaster if it hit a populated area.

Astronomers are now using the new James Webb Space Telescope to study the rock and understand more about its size and path. They said the asteroid will be at its brightest in March and May, and after that, it will be invisible to us until 2028.

Federal judges halts Trump/Musk actions

The federal judge who ordered a pause on the Trump administration’s “buyout” offer to 2 million federal workers to resign and get pay through September issued another order today to extend the pause until he made a ruling on whether the offers were legal.

The Trump administration said over 65,000 federal workers accepted the “buyout” offer. The appropriate term is a deferred resignation offer. The idea for the offers is to whittle down the size of the federal government and is being led by main Trump aide Elon Musk.

Several government unions and advocacy organizations sued the Trump administration saying it was unlawful. The New York Times said it’s not clear when the judge, U.S. District Judge George O’Toole Jr, would make a ruling.

In separate news, another federal judge, U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer, issued an emergency order on Saturday to restrict Elon Musk’s DOGE team from having access to the Treasury Department’s payment and data systems. The judge said there was a risk of leaks and hacking. The judge ordered anyone who downloaded copies and material to destroy the copies. The judge scheduled a hearing on Friday to hear arguments from the Trump administration and attorneys general from 19 states who filed a lawsuit that led to this order.
