3 Deaf News Briefs: “Echo” release; Keivonn Emmy; Celtics honor Seal family

Here are three Deaf News briefs.

“Echo,” starring Alaqua Cox, streaming tomorrow

The first is that “Echo,” a new Marvel series starring Deaf actress Alaqua Cox, will start streaming on January 9 on Disney+ and Hulu. You will have to set your Disney+ profile to TV-MA to stream it. There were new clips and trailers released over the weekend of Cox’s character, Echo, signing several phrases and showing incredible fighting abilities. As far as I know, this is the first series that features a Deaf actor/actress in a leading role.

Update on Keivonn Woodard’s Emmy nomination

The second Deaf News brief is that Keivonn Montreal Woodard, the 10-year-old Deaf actor who received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Sam in “The Last of Us,” did not win the award when the winners were announced on Saturday. The award went to Nick Offerman, who also had a guest role on the same show. It is still an extremely high level of achievement for Keivonn, who is the youngest-ever nominee in the category. The future is bright for him.

Boston Celtics honor Seal family

The third Deaf News brief is a touching and sweet tribute from the Boston Celtics for the family of Joshua Seal, who was tragically killed in the Lewiston, Maine shooting. Celtics player Derrick White posed for a photo with Joshua’s wife, Elizabeth, and their children. The team said the Seal family taught Derrick how to sign his name.
