2019 Winter Deaflympics: December 19 Updates

CALLIE FRYE:

Today, the United States Snowboarding team won more medals. Take a look!

SARAH GORDON:

Today is the “Big Air” snowboarding. It will start from the top over here. Athletes will slide down and jump over and spin, flip, or do grabs and different tricks.

[B-roll]

There are three judges who will look at their techniques and skills. Points will be awarded for each run. There are three runs and your best run will count towards a possible medal.

LAUREN WEIBERT:

I did what is called the method. It is a technique when you grab the board while jumping.

HANNAH WHEATCROFT:

I feel good. I feel good. I’m happy to be here and my mom is here. How did you feel watching me?

HANNAH’S MOTHER:

I’m excited for you. I’m thrilled to watch you.

HANNAH:

Were you scared or nervous?

MOTHER:

Yes, I was a bit afraid.

LAUREN BENEDICT MOWL:

I went for a clean, straight air with different grabs. I hope that at least one American will bring a medal home from this event!

SEAN ESSON:

The first jump, I did an Underflip 540. I aced the landing and felt confident

WEIBERT:

I’m really happy to medal. Just like I said earlier, I’m not a big jumps girl. So I’m really happy.

BENEDICT MOWL:

I’m really surprised and happy. On my first and second runs, I did okay. For the third run, I gave it all. I tried to go as clean as possible. I didn’t realize that this is what the judges were looking for the whole time. I’m really happy. I have a great team as well.

JEFF POLLOCK:

It seems like the paper with all the names on it and the bib numbers was… the names and numbers didn’t match up. It seems like they found the mistake and are fixing it. Will they get it right? We’ll see.

Text: THERE WAS A MIX-UP WITH THE NAMES AND BIB NUMBERS. OFFICIALS HAD TO TAKE AWAY THE MEDALS AND THEN REANNOUNCE THE WINNERS.

SEAN ESSON:

Thank you.

POLLOCK:

The judges admitted they made a mistake with feeding data in the computer system. They mixed up the names and numbers. It was not perfect so they had to go back and look at it again, and they realized and found their mistake. So, it the “original” third-place finisher was removed and the American moved to take the spot.

SARAH:

Sean won his bronze medal, which means he is in third. Although it was a controversial experience, he was a good sport and represented the USA well. Now the USA, today, has three medals. It’s an exciting day. All together there are five medals in two days. The snowboarding team is champ!

Congratulations to the US Snowboarding team that just had its last event today.

The US men’s curling team did not make it to the Top 4. With the record of 5 wins and 6 losses, they placed 8th out of 12 teams.

Tomorrow, there will be a curling final for the gold medal. Among the countries competing is Russia that will be facing off against China. Also, the women’s curling teams that will be playing for the gold medal, Russia and China!

CALLIE:

Ice hockey game tomorrow, on Friday — the US and Canada will play against each other.

Regardless of the result after the first game, these teams will play again this Saturday for the gold medal. Maybe winning will not be their goal for tomorrow’s game, but it depends on both teams’ coaching strategies.

I’m going to teach you the Italian sign for the word “snow”.

The Italian word is “neve.” (Shows sign)

That’s all for today. Good night from Italy!
